Northern lights/ Aurora Borealis
Common question asked, can you see the northern lights during the summer?
The cruise ships that pass through Southeast Alaska's inner passage provide an opportunity to view the aurora borealis, particularly as you travel further south.
While it is possible to see the lights during the summer months of June, July, and August, in certain locations of Southeast Alaska the brightness of the nights may impact the intensity of the colors. For a clearer and more vibrant view, the months of April, May, September, or October cruise months is when the nights are darker.
Additionally, the best time to view the aurora borealis is typically after midnight, with prime viewing hours falling between 1am and 3am.
To stay updated on the activity level of the northern lights, there are numerous apps available, such as Aurora Forecast, that track weekly and monthly patterns. Consider downloading one of these apps to enhance your chances of experiencing the stunning beauty of the aurora borealis.
